Why We Study Geography
At our school, geography is a vital subject that empowers pupils to understand the world around them and their place within it. Through the study of geography, children develop a sense of awe and wonder about the planet, fostering care, compassion, and respect for diverse environments and cultures. Geography helps pupils make connections between places, people, and environments at a range of scales—from local to global—encouraging them to think critically about the challenges and opportunities facing our world.
Geography is also a powerful tool for citizenship. It enables pupils to engage with real-world issues such as climate change, migration, and sustainability, giving them the knowledge and vocabulary to participate in informed discussions. By exploring both familiar and unfamiliar places, pupils gain a deeper understanding of their own locality in a broader context, building tolerance and appreciation for different ways of life.
How We Teach Geography
Our geography curriculum provides a knowledge-rich, strategically sequenced curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum. We teach geography through a combination of substantive knowledge (the facts and concepts of geography) and disciplinary knowledge (the methods and processes geographers use to understand the world).
Each block is driven by an enquiry question, which guides pupils through a sequence of lessons designed to build knowledge and skills progressively. Pupils explore geographical concepts such as climate zones, biomes, migration, and trade, while also developing fieldwork skills and map-reading abilities. Lessons are supported by high-quality resources including teaching slides and assessment materials.
Teachers are encouraged to interweave the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of geography—ensuring pupils not only learn geographical facts but also understand how these facts are investigated, justified, and revised. This approach promotes deep thinking and helps pupils retain knowledge through meaningful engagement.
What Is Special About Geography In 福利合集1000集
Geography in our school is rooted in our local context and enriched by global perspectives. We focus on both the local area and expand pupils’ horizons to explore the UK, Europe, and the wider world. This progression ensures pupils build a strong foundation before tackling more complex geographical ideas.
We place a strong emphasis on fieldwork and experiential learning, allowing pupils to explore their environment first-hand and apply their learning in real-world contexts. We also develop rich cross-curricular links between Geography and other curriculum subjects i.e. Orienteering in PE. During their time at 福利合集1000集, all children have the opportunity to develop their geographical skills and knowledge through residential trips to Whitby, Robin Hoods’ Bay and Ironbridge Gorge.
Our teaching encourages pupils to see themselves as active participants in shaping a sustainable future. This is enhanced further by the active members of our school council who contribute towards improving their local environment and the wider world. Geography lessons are designed to be engaging, thought-provoking, and relevant—helping pupils to develop curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong interest in the world around them.
